Book Review ~ Silver (The Silver #1) by Cheree Alsop

Silver
(The Silver #1)
by Cheree Alsop

Silver, book one of the Silver Series, is a coming of age story about a teenage werewolf whose father is murdered. He has to come to terms with his new life, new school, and new friends while trying to prevent more killings.

Attempting to make peace with the territory’s pack and finding out that the girl next door might be more than she lets on make his situation even more perilous.

Jaze and his mom moved to a new town after the death of his father who was killed by werewolf hunters.  Yes, his father was a werewolf and yes, so is Jaze.   Something is off with this new town, but when Jaze starts his first day of school, his suspensions are confirmed.....this town is full of werewolves!  He becomes friends with a human, Brock, and his secret is revealed one day when he had to save Brocks butt from the town's pack of werewolves. Brock is totally cool with Jaze being a werewolf and their friendship grows even further.   Determining that something or someone is killing all of the alpha males, Jaze, with the help of Brock, Mouse and Jaze's new love interest Nikki, are in for some killer action when they take on the werewolf responsible for all the mayhem.  Oh, and Nikki's parents?  They just happen to be werewolf hunters!  Things are about to get real interesting!!!

Silver is the first book of The Silver Series by Cheree Alsop.  You know what the best part is? All seven of the books have been released, so there is NO waiting for each book!  YAY!  This is just perfect for me because I really liked Silver and want to continue the series without playing the waiting game.  Silver was a really quick read and totally enjoyable.  This book is an awesome start to what looks like will be an amazing series.  With its own unique twist on werewolves, and totally likable characters, this one is a must to add to your reading list.

My rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Book Review ~ Dogs Don't Look Both Ways: A Primer on Unintended Consequences by Jane Hanser

Dogs Don't Look Both Ways:
A Primer on Unintended Consequences
by Jane Hanser

Synopsis

Joey Hanser, the chocolate Labrador Retriever, is a long-distance runner with a dream of his own -- and the route of the Boston Marathon is just the place to make it come true. Or is it?

This chocolate Labrador Retriever wakes up every morning with his dad before the sun rises and together they run 3, 6 or 12 miles. But Joey isn't content with that. He wants more. Much more. And he pushes his mom to her limit as a result. In Dogs Don't Look Both Ways, set in the neighborhood of the Boston Marathon, Joey bids you to wake up before dawn and be a part of this funny, loving and strong-willed dog’s aspirations – and see where his insatiable curiosity leads him. Will it lead to gratification? Or to danger? As Joey tells his story in humorous and heartwarming fashion, you'll learn a lot about dogs, about yourself, about boundaries, and about our dependence on the kindness of others. You're also in for some real surprises and adventure - and more than a few trips to the animal hospital.

Dogs Don't Look Both Way is a true and inspiring story, told from a unique voice, is richly illustrated, and one for all ages and all families.

My Thoughts

Joey Hanser is a very handsome Labrador Retriever who has endless amounts of energy and curiosity.  His need to explore outside his boundaries offered him opportunities to meet new friends (and get treats!), but it also led to a horrible accident...an accident that could have had a sad ending.  But with Joey's determination and the love and support of his parents, Joey learns that maybe, just maybe, some of those rules are important and if the rules are broken, then there are consequences.

All dogs need rules and boundaries set early in their life, but sometimes whether it is because of the breed or just plain stubbornness, those rules get ignored by our pets. This book really is a primer on a dog's life and what happens when they don't listen to their parents rules.  If dogs could read, then this book should be mandatory for them.  For the parents of dogs, this is also a must read!  It is very inspiring and also very insightful!

This was such an awesome book!   It was a pure joy to get a glimpse of Joey's world and his endless curiosity of the world around him.  Written from Joey's point of view provided a very unique reading experience that was both fun and insightful.  Joey's words and thoughts are exactly what I think my pets would say if they could talk to me.  I want to give Joey's parents kudos for being so patient with him and understanding of his need to explore the world around him and I also want to give kudos for them being there for Joey when his explorations went horribly bad.  Joey is an awesome dog and everyone should read his story. I don't normally give spoilers, but this one does have a happy ending, so no tissues are necessary!  So go ahead and grab this beautifully written book, get comfortable and enjoy a few hours in Joey's world.  You will not be disappointed!

This one gets a 5 paw rating and is Roscoe approved for dogs (and their humans) of any age!

Book Review ~ The Chimera Vector (Fifth Column #1) by Nathan M. Farrugia

The Chimera Vector

(Fifth Column #1)
by Nathan M. Farrugia

The Fifth Column: the world’s most powerful and secretive organization. They run our militaries. They run our governments. They run our terrorist cells.

Recruited as a child, Sophia is a deniable operative for the Fifth Column. Like all operatives, Sophia’s DNA has been altered to augment her senses and her mind is splintered into programmed subsets.

On a routine mission in Iran something goes catastrophically wrong. Bugs are beginning to appear in Sophia’s programming and the mission spins out of control.

High-speed chases, gun fights, helicopter battles, immortal psychopaths, super soldiers and mutant abilities are all in the mix in this edge-of-your-seat action-packed techno-thriller.

Perfect for fans of Matthew Reilly, THE CHIMERA VECTOR melds sci-fi with sizzling espionage action.

First off, I want to thank the author, Nathan Farrugia, for offering me the opportunity to read The Chimera Vector.  I try to never pass up the chance to discover new authors and really looked forward to reading this book.  I also want to apologize to Mr. Farrugia for the lack of timeliness of my review.

Now, for the nitty gritty.  The Chimera Vector is the perfect combination of an action-packed thriller and science fiction that kept me engaged throughout.  There was never a dull moment when reading this book and the details were realistic enough to be believable.  So believable in fact, that with the advancements in the medical field, this piece of fiction might just become reality in the near future.  I really enjoyed the characters and loved the fact that the main character was a strong female who can kick some major butt!

For a debut novel, this one was so well-written, you would think it was written by a seasoned author.  I did not find one flaw with the editing – at all.  Mr. Farrugia has done an outstanding job of writing a book that was intriguing, action-filled and fast-paced.  You can instantly tell that the author is very knowledgeable of the subject matter and has done his research extremely well. The plot was unique and different from anything that I have read.

If you are looking for something to read that has non-stop action, government conspiracy and espionage and enjoy being on the edge of your seat the entire time, then I would highly recommend this book.

My rating:  4 out of 5 stars

Nathan Farrugia served in the Australian Army in infantry and reconnaissance, and studied film, television and professional writing. He worked as a post-production video editor, colorist and copywriter, where he earned the nickname Fagoogoo because no one could pronounce Farrugia.

Nathan lives in Melbourne, Australia. In his spare time he discovers hidden places around the world with urban explorers, practices lock picking and escaping from plasticuffs and straitjackets (you never know when that will come in handy, right?) and studies Systema, a little-known martial art and closely guarded secret of Russian special forces. Nathan has trained under USMC, SEAL team and Spetsnaz instructors, the Chiricahua Apache scouts and Australian Aboriginals. He also drinks tea.

Book Review ~ Earth (Book One of the Invasion) by Jessica Frances ~ Virtual Book Tour + Excerpt +Giveaway

EARTH
(Book One of the Invasion)
by Jessica Frances

New Adult Sci-Fi Romance
Date Published: June 19, 2014

Earth is being invaded. There was no warning and no time to stage any kind of defense. Instead countries started to go silent. They were no longer reachable and no one knew what was happening.
So when Canada went dark; everyone knew America would be next.

Mattie:

My name is Matilda, but everyone calls me Mattie. I was at college in Oregon when the attack began. By the time Canada went quiet, we’d had enough. So two of my friends and I decided to join the fight in Vancouver and find out what was really happening.
That is when everything changed. What we found was death, destruction and machines that were slaughtering humans. There would be no escape for us; no place to go where the machines couldn't reach us.
I had no future, but then I met him.

Marduke:

My name is Marduke and I’m part of the reason Earth is being invaded. I’m from a different planet and even though I look human, I’m not. But when Earth was invaded, I began running from my family and running for my life.
Then she saved me.
She made me feel something I’d never felt before. She saved my life and opened my heart to the possibility of love, she changed me forever.

What are the chances of finding your true love right when the world is ending? What kind of cruel fate places them together under those circumstances?
What is she supposed to do when he tells her he is not from Earth? When she finds out that he is one of the invaders?
What does she do when she finds out everything she thought she knew was wrong?
What does he do when he has to make a choice between protecting her and saving himself?

How can they overcome everything standing in their way?

Earth by Jessica Frances is one of those books that once you start, you will not be able to put it down. No, really!  It was completely impossible to even think about stopping to do anything else but read this amazing story!

Ms. Frances has done a magnificent job of describing what it might be like if Earth was taken over by aliens - the destruction, the search for food and water, and the loss of loved ones. In between all the chaos, the reader also gets to see two people, from two totally different worlds fall in love {{sigh}}.  The story is told by alternating between Marduke and Mattie’s point of view and I thought it really brought depth to the story, connecting me with the characters almost as if I was right there with them.  The world building was absolutely brilliant and was described so perfectly, I could envision the whole thing unfolding before my very eyes - and at times, what I was envisioning was truly horrific.  I can't even imagine the despair and anguish the residents of Earth endured during the hostile takeover.

This story has just the right combination of science fiction, action and romance that keeps the reader engaged throughout.  My only complaint with this book is that it ended and I have to wait for the second installment of this epic trilogy.  Ms. Frances is truly a talented writer and I look forward to reading more from her.

The truck moves again and this time we do topple over. Neither of us have put seatbelts on, so we both crash to the ceiling, my head taking most of the impact as my legs fall into the steering wheel.
I scream in shock, and as my mind catches up, I realise there is no way Hank and Lisa would be okay after being crushed into the road.
“Hank!” I scream out again, panicking as the truck is hit once more and we slide along the road. “Lisa!” I screech when we finally stop and hands grab hold of me, dragging me through the windshield which broke long ago.
It’s Hank, and as he drags me free, he quickly moves back to take hold of Marduke. Blood pours down from my forehead, but I don’t bother checking myself any further. My eyes first find the machine as it leers over us then I see Lisa off to the side, hiding by some bushes.
“We need to get out of here, now!” Hank has Marduke up and on his feet. The truck shakes as the machine shoots at it, and I’m half expecting a fireball to burst out at us.
“Take this!” I thrust the grenade into Hank’s hand and then wrap Marduke’s arm over my shoulder.
Hank begins shooting with the handgun, heading around the truck and jogging in the opposite direction to Lisa.
I stumble her way with Marduke, hoping Hank can keep the attention on him while we get away.
Marduke grunts in pain as he has to put heavy pressure on his knee, and I cry in shock when I feel his body jolt forward from the impact of a bullet hitting his back. He pushes me off him and I lose my balance, falling to the ground.
“Run!” he yells at me. But before I can even consider moving at all, an explosion erupts and everything goes black.

Jessica Frances

Born and raised in South Australia, Jessica spends her days working in a bakery, afternoons catching up on lost sleep, and nights reading and writing. After having the Taken Trilogy taking up space in her head for years, she was relieved to have a break and her mind clear. But apparently the free rent was spoken to Mattie and her friends, because now she is hearing new voices and a whole new story. The Invasion Trilogy was then born.
