Official Music Playlist

When I’m working on a book the first thing I do is figure out the “feel” or “atmosphere” of the book. Most of the time this involves listening to music. For MYSTIQUE I listened to a lot of Bon Iver, Feist, Fleet Foxes, Frightened Rabbit, Local Natives and Loney, Dear. But the album I listened to on repeat, the one that most of the songs directly inspired scenes for MYSTIQUE, is Go by Jónsi. I listened to the song, Grow Till Tall, while writing the scene where Presley is running from the soldiers. Even now when I hear it I see her running across an open field while helicopters circle overhead.

Songs:

1.    Graveyard by Feist
2.    White Winter Hymnal by Fleet Foxes
3.    Your Protector by Fleet Foxes
4.    The Loneliness and the Scream by Frightened Rabbit
5.    Blindsided by Bon Iver
6.    Grow Till Tall by Jónsi

These songs really helped create the mood I needed to write. And when I wasn’t writing I listened to them as well to help me brainstorm. Not to be dramatic or anything, but without music I wouldn’t find what I’m looking for. It inspires every scene in my head.

Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ Love Me Never (Lovely Vicious #1) by Sara Wolf

Love Me Never
(Lovely Vicious, #1)
By  Sara Wolf
Release Date: Apr. 5, 2016
Genre: YA Contemporary Romance / Dark Comedy

Previously published as Lovely Vicious, this fully revised and updated edition is full of romance, intrigue, and laugh-out-loud moments.

Don’t love your enemy. Declare war on him.

Seventeen-year-old Isis Blake hasn’t fallen in love in three years, nine weeks, and five days, and after what happened last time, she intends to keep it that way. Since then she’s lost eighty-five pounds, gotten four streaks of purple in her hair, and moved to Buttcrack-of-Nowhere, Ohio, to help her mom escape a bad relationship.

All the girls in her new school want one thing—Jack Hunter, the Ice Prince of East Summit High. Hot as an Armani ad, smart enough to get into Yale, and colder than the Arctic, Jack Hunter’s never gone out with anyone. Sure, people have seen him downtown with beautiful women, but he’s never given high school girls the time of day. Until Isis punches him in the face.

Jack’s met his match. Suddenly everything is a game.

The goal: Make the other beg for mercy.
The game board: East Summit High.
The reward: Something neither of them expected.

“Who are you waiting for?” Knife Kid asks.
“That obvious, huh?”
“Jack, then. Screaming at him wasn’t enough?”
“He was the one who put the pictures of me all over school. Hell no, screaming isn’t enough.”
Knife Kid nods. “I saw the pictures. I had fun slashing them with my protractor. Nobody should be made fun of like that, I think.”
I don’t know whether to smile at how sweet he sounds or become extremely concerned at how creepy he sounds. I settle for a little of both just as Jack comes in. He walks right by and settles in his desk behind me. I turn and watch him take off his backpack.
“Hi.” I wave.
It takes him a moment to recognize me. Or a million. He focuses his gaze on me, then looks boredly to the window. He puts his chin in his hand, studies a pigeon in a tree with utmost intensity, and then all at once his eyes go wide. He swivels his head slowly back to me.
“You,” he murmurs.
“Me!” I chirp.
“What the hell are you doing in that?” he asks, eyes sweeping down to my chest, my legs, and up again.
“Damage control.” I smile. “Do you like it?”
“I’ve seen pigs dressed better.”
“Oh, I don’t doubt that, considering you see one in the mirror every morning.”

Sara Wolf is a twenty-something author who adores baking, screaming at her cats, and screaming at herself while she types hilarious things. When she was a kid, she was too busy eating dirt to write her first terrible book. Twenty years later, she picked up a keyboard and started mashing her fists on it and created the monster known as the Lovely Vicious series. She lives in San Diego with two cats, a crippling-yet-refreshing sense of self-doubt, and not enough fruit tarts ever.

Blog Tour & Giveaway ~ Dragonfly by Alyssa Thiessen {Guest Post}

Dragonfly
by Alyssa Thiessen
Publication Date: February 6, 2016
Publisher: Peasantry Press

Eighteen-year-old Joshua Miller is great at being invisible, despite the four, large, insect-like wings protruding from his back and his knack for high-rise robberies. He can remember almost nothing of his life before Nik found him and taught him his trade. Now he’s alone, and he likes it that way.

When Joshua unexpectedly meets Lexi on a job, his simple, uncomplicated existence shifts. Although he intends to remain uninvolved, something about her captivates him and he begins to let her in. As he navigates the strange nuances of a relationship with a girl as desperate to be different as he is to be ordinary, he becomes increasingly aware that he is not who he wants to be for her. Confronted by the past he’d forgotten and a family he didn’t know existed, Joshua must decide for himself where he belongs and who holds the key to his future.

Dear Readers,
I wrote Dragonfly to tell the familiar story of a person who feels isolated and alone, trapped by circumstances, by choices, and by regret, and who is eventually changed through love. But I hope I tell it in a different way.
My protagonist, Joshua, is a character I’ve known for years. I created him when I was a teen, and back then, he was much more inherently heroic than he is in the final novel. But I love him how exists today; flawed, conflicted, trying.
Joshua, who has Dragonfly-like wings and very little memories of his childhood, makes his living from observing the world around him and stealing from unsuspecting marks. His callousness has been created and encouraged by his mentor, but he continues living that way by choice. When he meets Lexi, he realizes that even though he can’t see a future with her, he’s no longer okay with being the man he has chosen to be. She changes the way he sees the world, and through that, the way he sees himself.
There are other things that happen in the story, of course. Some action, some angst, some surprises, and an unexpected journey. But at its heart, Dragonfly is Joshua’s love story – and not necessarily just the romantic kind.
Personally, I identify with Joshua’s longing to be better, to be forgiven, to be somehow deserving. And I also know, like I think my characters do, that the answer Is ultimately found through love.
Over all, it is my hope that readers who embark on Joshua’s journey with him enjoy the ride. Happy reading, from this traveller.

Alyssa Thiessen, author

A goodbye:
I led the way to the window and then turned, my back against the wall, with her standing just inches from me. I wondered what her lips would taste like. I’d called her innocent and naïve, but I’d never even kissed anyone before. I got the distinct impression she wouldn’t object. Instead though, I simply nodded and turned to leave.
“Are you really going to call me this time?” she asked.

“Of course.” As I disappeared into the darkness, I knew that should be the last lie I’d ever tell her.

BAM | Indies |  Amazon | B&N | TBD

When she's not donning her secret identity and saving the world, Thiessen keeps busy writing her next novel, reading something beautiful, teaching high school English, drinking coffee, cycling, and hanging out with her family - husband, kiddies, and miniature schnauzer.
